1958 to…………Our Rich History
The
“Albion” was established in 1958/59 by the employees of Redpath Brown (St
Andrews) Steelworks of Albion Road, Leith, Edinburgh.
The club began with the Redpath workforce establishing a Juvenile side, to
encourage works apprentices and local youths within the community to
participate in sports and recreation, particularly Football. The name was
derived from the company trading name “Redpath” and the locality of the
steelworks “Albion Road” Our first kit was ‘borrowed’ from near neighbours
Hibernian FC, who supplied shorts and socks, with the company’s workforce
supplying funds for jerseys.
From youth/juvenile teams to full U21 status the club and company enjoyed
relative success.
As the years passed the club moved on to Amateur status and joined the ranks of the Edinburgh Amateur F.A., now re-branded as the Lothian & Edinburgh Amateur Football Association.
Unfortunately, the economic climate enforced an amalgamation with another steel manufacturer, and the Steelworks relocated under the name of Redpath Dorman-Long and closed its doors in 1969. The company’s long, distinguished history as a major world wide steel supplier, the main stand at Hearts FC was constructed from Redpath Steel, was in decline. The mass redundancies suffered by the proud ‘steelmen’ was a bitter blow, but in spite of this, the club battled on, and thanks to the committed dedication and a proud legacy passed on by a number of ex-players the club continues to play its part in local Amateur football.
In 1988 the Amateur club officials decided to re-establish the policy on which the club was formed and adopted the old principals of Sport and Recreation, and to form a boys club in the Lorne/Pilrig Area of Leith. Giving something back to the community by way of an outlet for young people to achieve their sporting ambitions was an appropriate way to celebrate 30 years of Football. The partnership link with the Pilmeny Youth Centre, also based in Lorne area, provided scope for taking the boys club to a new level. Our first under 10 side participated in the Lothian Amateur Boys FA, then the club enjoyed over a decade of membership with the Lothian Federation of Boys Clubs, then Lothian Clubs for Young People. Success followed in a number of sports with Gold medallists at X-Country, Pool, Snooker and Unihoc being among our major successes. The club can proudly boast of having eight youth team players capped for Boys Club of Scotland National football side. As we surpass our half-century, we can proudly count four generations of players who have been associated with the club, Grandfathers, Fathers and Sons have all enjoyed the experience of being an “Albion” member.
